Eagles have symbolized power, strength, and faithfulness since Roman times, and the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) appears on most of the official symbols of the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin was a vocal advocate of the Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) as an appropiate emblem for the fledgling republic but was outvoted by supporters of the Bald Eagle.
